It wasn&#039;t until the early 1980s that the company began developing and distributing computer games. Konami made its first name with the arcade title &quot;Frogger,&quot; in which players helped a frog cross a busy street safely. Thanks to the establishment of various branches in the USA (1982), Germany, and Great Britain (1984), the game also became a classic in the Western world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Konami&#039;s most important mainstay was the home console and handheld market. It was games for Nintendo&#039;s NES and Game Boy, in particular, that established the company&#039;s legendary reputation\u2014such as &quot;Metal Gear Solid&quot; (originally released for PC), &quot;Castlevania&quot; (known in Japan as &quot;Demon Castle Dracula&quot;), and &quot;Contra.&quot; Since Nintendo&#039;s licensing policy only allowed external game developers to publish five games per year for the NES, Konami promptly founded a fictitious subsidiary called Ultra to continue the high game output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On subsequent generations of consoles, these series were successfully developed further and new titles were added. &quot;Pro Evolution Soccer,&quot; which first appeared on the PlayStation 1 in 2001, became the fiercest competitor to EA&#039;s FIFA series, and &quot;Silent Hill&quot; established itself as a serious alternative in the horror genre alongside Capcom&#039;s &quot;Resident Evil.&quot; Konami&#039;s greatest artistic and commercial success, however, remains the Metal Gear Solid series, which established the so-called &quot;stealth&quot; genre. Conceived by Hideo Kojima, the series sold a total of 31 million copies between 1987 and 2011 and is considered a prime example of how to combine challenge and entertainment in video games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company experienced a crisis in 1995 when its headquarters in Kobe were almost completely destroyed by the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake, and years of game designs and storyboards were lost.
